ABSTRACT

The being and perfections, the providence and government of God, lie at the foundation of all true religion – of all real happiness – of our very being – and, of the universe in general. The doctrine of a general providence does, in some respects, include a particular one; for it implies that the most inconsiderable plant, the meanest insect, and the most contemptible reptile, are under the perpetual guardianship and protection of God. When the Hebrews had been delivered from the Egyptian bondage, had passed through the Red sea on dry land, and had seen the hand of God on Pharaoh and his army. God wrought wonders for Israel, in the land of Egypt, in the Red sea, and in the wilderness, because he intended to make them a great nation, and a blessing to all the families of the earth.
