ABSTRACT

The individual work system gives the pupil a systematic way to approach the work that needs to be completed for each of his tasks within a lesson. During the Foundation Stage, pupils working towards the Early Learning Goals relating to personal, social and emotional development need to acquire a number of basic skills that become increasingly important as they develop. Curriculum guidance for teaching pupils with learning difficulties identifies the need for pupils to develop organisation and study skills in all subjects, and in all key stages. The work system can be utilised to increase a pupil's attention, interest and motivation, help him to manage independent work time and to complete tasks independently. Ricky uses a similar colour/shape matching system for structured play activities in the play area. Work systems are often introduced within one learning context, such as the pupil's main classroom or learning support base.
