ABSTRACT

The aim of this work is to examine the geological characteristics of early medieval sculptures in Angus and Perth and Kinross (at St Vigeans, and related local collections) and evaluate the use of these data in sourcing the stone used. In addition, the geological characteristics have been used to identify which, if any, carved fragments are likely to have come from the same monument. It is hoped that this, in turn, will aid future interpretation and presentation of the St Vigeans and related collections. A petrological and magnetic susceptibility measurement survey has been carried out on 112 early medieval sculptures found in the area. The lithological characterisation of the sculpture is compared to that of the outcrops in the area.
