ABSTRACT

In an undated petition, Kechyn asked Henry VIII for the place of wait, from 1 July 1511, which place 'he had wt the ... late kyng'. This is the only evidence that he held such a post under Henry VII, but there is no reason to doubt it since few musician's names survive from that period. His petition was successful, for the accounts show he was appointed from July 1511 at 4d a day. Apart from a warrant of 14 Nov 1514 to supply him with a tawny gown, the only references to Keychn are in the accounts. He was still in service when they break off at April 1521, but by Michaelmas 1525, when they resume, his name is absent.
