ABSTRACT

The fifth chapter highlights the ascent to power of the remigré network's members through their ownership of the narrative. Brandt's 1957 election as West Berlin's governing mayor exemplified the growing influence and resources of the network. Less prominent members who advanced into powerful positions outside government were Richard Löwenthal at the Free University and Shepard Stone at the Ford Foundation. This chapter illuminates how the remigré network propelled careers, examining the resources and strategies network members could employ against competitors in West and East Berlin alike. More broadly, the chapter scrutinizes how this development fit into the broader postwar economic miracle.
