ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the methods and standards for transportation, which include Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG)-2 system, MPEG-4 system, MPEG media transport, and MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It introduces the concept of systems and transportation standards and provides detailed explanations for existing standards. The MPEG-2 system coding is specified in two forms: the transport stream and the program stream. Each is optimized for a different set of applications. The chapter provides the technical definitions that are often used in the system document. A transport stream combines one or more programs with one or more time bases into a single stream. The task of the transport stream coding layer is to allow one or more programs to be combined into a single stream. In the program stream, the timing information for a decoding system is the System Clock Reference; in the transport stream, the timing information is given by the Program Clock Reference.
