ABSTRACT

Networked control systems NCS can be categorized into two categories: wired NCS and wireless NCS (WNCS) which correspond to their communication mediums. The typical home and office WNCS utilizes Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, and Z-wave technologies while the industrial WNCS are well known with Wireless highway addressable remote transducer (HART) and international society of automation (ISA) 100 Wireless technologies. For WirelessHART, normally, gateway or network manager can hold the roles of network manager, security manager, and gateway at the same physical, embedded device. In ISA100 Wireless, backbone router is slightly different. It can have functionalities of a gateway, system manager, security manager and router. WirelessHART field devices and adaptors can serve as relays allowing message distribution in the mesh network topology while in ISA100 Wireless, Input/Output are separated from the routers. The sink acts as a centralized router that routes packets to all destinations. The network manager performs communication scheduling for all devices on a periodic basis.
