ABSTRACT

Get rid of or protect against product elements that might pinch or crush body parts. Pinch points are exactly what they sound like: places where a body part, or even an entire person, can be compressed by moving parts. Pinch points often generate high amounts of pressure due to their “lever nature.” As a result, serious damage can occur to a body part caught in a pinch point. Muscle and tissue damage can occur because a pinching accident occludes blood flow. When possible, pinch hazards should be eliminated through design. Reduce the space between moving parts so that the vulnerable body part cannot fit between them. Way to eliminate a pinch hazard is to opt for a mechanism that achieves the same mechanical function without the need for components to move in a way that could catch a body part.
