ABSTRACT

Maintenance and repair of complex products, products requiring careful calibration, or products containing hazardous materials should be performed by professionals. Some products are so complicated and/or dangerous to disassemble that maintenance and repair tasks should be performed only by trained professionals. In lieu of a professional’s attention to it, a product might be damaged or reassembled—perhaps unknowingly—in a way that renders it inoperable or more likely to fail at a time when it is supposed to be serving a safety-critical function. One potential hazard is that a product contains a hazardous material. Another potential hazard could be internal components, such as those with case parts with burred and sharp edges that could cause lacerations and abrasions. To combat the tendency among some individuals to undertake complex and dangerous maintenance tasks, some manufacturers include compelling warnings about the hazards and potential harms of doing so.
