ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to critically examine the combination of cultural transfer approaches and memory studies since the mid-1980s, a combination that ultimately proved crucial in conceptualizing the issue of European memories in recent publications. It argues that the affinity and cross-pollination of these two research currents merits in-depth theoretical discussion, something it has yet to receive. Reflecting on this specific issue and selectively surveying the most recent literature in this area as well as the major developments in its study, this chapter sheds light on the fruitful interactions between these two fields of research.
