ABSTRACT

This chapter explores corrupt dynamics and anti-corruption efforts in the South Pacific region. This chapter documents the regional approach to combating corruption and explores the key actors and institutions that make up the regional sphere. The unique qualities of the region are presented and the role of colonial history and cultural diversity are noted. The impact of corruption in the region is noted, relating to three key areas: aid and development, crime and security, and environment and economy. The chapter goes on to document regional engagement with UNCAC and the global anti-corruption regime, concluding that key challenges for implementation and enforcement of UNCAC in this region relate to the actions of deviant actors, potential inapplicability of the regime, and risks of non-compliance in particular domestic contexts.
