ABSTRACT

Of the two sorts of timber, hard and soft, only the second is discussed here. Its uses, sources, markets, and the conditions of its production are entirely distinct from the hardwoods, and at the moment it raises the more pressing economic questions. Latvian timber exports, for instance, constitute 40 per cent of the total export trade; 80 per cent of Finnish exports are timber and wood products which have been manufactured from the native growth; 12 per cent of the total exports of Austria, whose chief exports since the War have been non-industrial products, are timber. Poland as well has vital timber interests. Because of the importance of timber to many countries a considerable amount of organization on national lines has been developed. It is not surprising in view of Russia's strong position that Canada should recently have become alarmed for its own timber exports.
