ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a range of practical ideas and resources for developing the ability to read and express emotions effectively. It contains ideas for gaining more insight into the physiology of trainees' brain and how the different parts are integral to how we process and manage our emotions. The first step in successfully managing emotions is to become more aware of them, recognising how trainee might be feeling in any particular moment, or being able to identify how trainee have felt during the day. A helpful tool for successfully managing trainees' emotions, particularly when trainees are experiencing uncomfortable emotions, such as anger or chronic worry/anxiety, is to recognise that the chimp part of the brain has taken over and that it is directing behaviour. Helping children and young people to have an understanding of which part of their brain is in charge can help them to step back from the situation and help them with their emotional regulation.
