ABSTRACT

Therapeutic stories are narratives that help children and young people discover there are solutions to their worries and problems. Through listening to a story of someone who has been through a difficult yet similar situation to themselves, individuals can be encouraged to discover positive strategies that might work for them. The way the story is written, and the type and number of illustrations used, obviously varies tremendously, but as long as you stick with the genre and language of the particular age group there is no reason why therapeutic stories cannot be used with a wide range of ages. It is comforting to hear a story about someone who has gone through a similar difficulty to yourself. Through hearing such stories pupils feel that they are not alone. Creating a story for a pupil is a useful exercise in itself for helping you to think about whether you have fully understood what is going on for them.
