ABSTRACT

Gerd Grimm was an energetic person, determined and independent. He understood the need to make difficult decisions. Estafeta is a parcel service and express delivery company in Mexico that Mr. Grimm founded. The company started in 1979 by introducing the first door-to-door delivery service in the country, and is now the largest delivery company in Mexico. Gerd Grimm had been involved from the start in the worldwide development of the express delivery industry. He formed a joint venture in 1974 with World Courier Corporation (WCC), the first company ever to offer international express delivery services. Mr. Grimm's immediate family has never played a major role in the management of the business or any strategic decision-making. In 2011, when Mr. Grimm was faced with a terminal illness and the need for securing his legacy and continuity for the company, he was confronted with three alternatives in ownership changes that could be implemented: external opportunity, internal strategy, and organic change strategy.
