ABSTRACT

In teaching, faculty can use their own qualitative datasets or archived ones. This chapter deals with the benefits for students of reanalyzing qualitative datasets and identifies the ethics involved in using archived data from a teaching perspective. Bishop examined the ethical implications of using archived qualitative data for teaching proposes. Metadata, data about data, is important for qualitative secondary data analysis because it is an essential form of communication between the primary researchers and the secondary analysts. The professor is privy to all the details of the qualitative study where the dataset is from and can share this as an introduction to the class assignment. Researchers often use content analysis in their qualitative secondary analysis. The chapter concludes with an example of an archive, the U. K. Data Service, which provides teaching opportunities for faculty using its data.
