ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the process involved in conducting a secondary qualitative analysis and deals with a description of the typologies in the chronological order they were published in the literature. The primary study was a mixed methods study on secondary traumatic stress in labor and delivery nurses. The secondary analysis only used the data from the qualitative strand where labor and delivery nurses described their experiences caring for women during traumatic births. In secondary qualitative reuse of data, content analysis can be used in different ways. M. A. Bohren and colleagues’ typology provided the categories for the content analysis in the secondary analysis of mothers’ descriptions of their traumatic births in high income countries. The purpose of their secondary analysis study was to focus further on nurses’ experiences of moral distress when they felt constrained in caring for their patients with optimal pain management.
