ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 explains the rationale for conducting a largely virtual, longitudinal ethnographic investigation of the first offering of the online course. After presenting the research questions, details are provided about the research design and methodological framework that centred on the language and intercultural learning and global mindedness of the 22 participants. The roles assumed by the author and the ethical dimension of the study are described. After discussing the instrumentation, procedures, and data analyses, an overview is provided of the sojourn learning of the full cohort (e.g. gains in intercultural competence), and the organization of the remaining chapters is explained.
