ABSTRACT

Visit any primary school in the country and children will undoubtedly find reference texts sitting on the bookshelves found in each classroom. M. Ashikuzzaman recognises various characteristics of reference texts that are useful for child authors and professionals to know: the information included in reference texts is collected from vast number of sources and they are referred to for definite items of information. When planning a reference text, it is useful for child authors to select from a range of practical strategies that allow them to quickly generate and jot down different ideas relating to specific type of reference text that they wish to write. When child authors are writing their own reference text entries, teach/encourage them to hyperlink the text to the contents page, index and glossary if they are using information and communication technology applications. Child authors can sometimes confuse an index with a contents page so it is useful for professionals to help them recognise the differences.
