ABSTRACT

The main purpose of explanations is to explain to the reader how or why something happens. A successful explanation text has the ability to explain even the most complex concept in such a way that it is easy for the reader to understand. It is vital that prior to child authors putting pen-to-paper/finger-to-keyboard they must fully understand the concept that they are going to be explaining. In an effort to embark on the writing of an explanation text, it is beneficial that child authors are provided with the opportunity to explore a range of explanatory texts. To inspire child authors to write explanation texts they need to have access to inspirational explanation texts that can be read and used as a model for their own writing. Being able to use the appropriate language of explanation is vital when child authors are writing an explanatory text.
