ABSTRACT

The writing of good discussion texts (RE) helps to develop child authors’ persuasive writing skills. However, professionals are reminded that RE are less subjective or emotive than persuasive writing: a persuasive text aims to make the reader agree with a particular viewpoint presented to them whereas a RE should encourage the reader to make up their own mind from the information they are offered. J. Barwick describes a discussion as ‘presenting different opinions, viewpoints or perspectives on an issue, enabling the reader to explore different ideas before making an informed decision’. Professionals are understandably apprehensive of using discussions during Religious Education due to the controversial and contentious nature of some of the issues that may be debated. Challenge child authors to write a carefully-worded RE in which they present their balanced reasons why one of their peers in the class should be chosen for the role.
