ABSTRACT

The aim of this study to investigate the frequency, to explore the causes of the occupational accidents and to identify the risks which occur during the daily routine works and dangerous works to be fulfilled. After analyzing the main causes and risk factors of the occupational accidents clearly, it would be easier to take correct preventive measures. The data for this study were obtained from occupational accidents reports which published by countries’ marine accident investigation branches/units such as Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), Marine Safety Investigation Unit and etc. The findings showed that fall on board/falls overboard is the most common accident type and able seamen are more prone to be injured when compare with the other members of crew. As a conclusion, occupational accidents aboard merchant ships is massive problem to be taken care of and the analysis showed that still more consideration should be given to human and organizational factors.
