ABSTRACT

The idea of sustainable development makes the basis for a new thinking about civilization and strikes fundamental aspects of to-date human activity. It assumes the rejection of the present model of development chiefly focused on pursuing infinite economic growth; therefore it requires a transformation of consciousness in the direction of perceiving the relationship and harmony between economic, human and social values and their interdependence with nature. The article is to analyze sustainable shipping in the context of the wider concept of sustainable development. I verify the hypothesis about the necessity of its implementation through a process of multidimensional and long-term education covering the aspects of responsibility for the use of commodities, responsibility for present and future generations and human responsibility for nature as the three aspects of the proper functioning of sustainable shipping. The implementation of the sustainability intentions is still at an early stage and thus, it deserves a closer look and a thorough discussion within the circles of people related to maritime industry, maritime trade and economy if shipping is to become truly sustainable
