ABSTRACT

This book explores the concept of Building Back Better for resilient post disaster recovery. Post disaster recovery goes through several stages and is often ad hoc and inefficient. The long-term positive or negative impacts of recovery decisions begin to materialise many years later. The concept of Building Back Better emerged from the need to make a deliberate effort to ensure resilient outcomes through the recovery process. The recurrent large-scale international disaster events illuminated the need to create less vulnerable, resilient communities, and planning for Building Back Better was included as a priority in the global disaster risk reduction agenda set by the United Nations for the next 15 years.
