ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 details Psychological and Social Recovery as a vital component of Building Back Better. This is the fourth Principle in the Mannakkara and Wilkinson BBB Framework. Post disaster recovery efforts often focus on fast solutions around re-housing affected people, reducing vulnerabilities and rebuilding infrastructure. Social, cultural, religious, ethnic and psychological factors greatly impact the recovery process. BBB recovery includes the incorporation of support systems for psychological and social recovery as a core component of recovery programmes. BBB also emphasises that recovery needs to focus on people, and needs to involve and empower locals by involving them in the recovery planning and implementation process as part of the strategy.
