ABSTRACT
Soil and landscape art can inform each other in ways that can enhance human appreciation for the land and its essential soil functions for ecological integrity, agricultural production, and human health. Art that restores natural soils and land functions can be combined in a transdisciplinary way with the study of soil in the laboratory. The combination of macroscale field projects and molecular-level laboratory studies leads to creative moments of intuition about the true nature of soils, their resilience, and how they function naturally and under the influence of human restoration. Soil chemist Bruce James and artists Daniel McCormick and Mary O'Brien conducted dialogue for this chapter with phone calls and e-mails, which accommodated their distance at opposite ends of the United States.
