ABSTRACT

Not being raised Christian, I don't think it has anything to do with creation, but it is everything about creating. Maybe it's not what it means, but what you associate it with … My first association was in college, where I had to take a pottery class. I didn't want to take it. I wanted to be an artist. Painting and sculpture and all that. I remember my first critique with an instructor. His name was Bob. He said, “Who did this?” and his finger was pressing on it, and he pressed it so hard it broke. He just picked it up and threw it in the slip bucket and said, “If you're going to make an ashtray, make a damn good one.” Then he said, “Don't worry, it's only mud.” And that unleashed it for me. Once you get into clay, you get into soil and all its capacity.
