ABSTRACT

In a series of conversations and emails, Nance Klehm and Akilah Martin discussed their unconventional methods of reawakening citizens and students to reconnect and positively engage with the living soil heritage beneath their feet. Coming from two very different backgrounds and disciplines, they agree that soil is the fabric of our heritage. Soil heritage threads together a community's past, present, and future. What is evident in both women's work is that cultivation of the land and the people in an urban center requires unimaginable creativity and strategizing. Connecting people to the Earth and disconnecting them from past forces that kept them away, can lead to an ethos that provides opportunities for growth and leadership of our Earth's resources.
