ABSTRACT

30Molecular basis of heredity has long been a subject of discussion. The central dogma theory forms the pivot for explanation of processes such as transcription and translation. DNA/RNA forms the genetic basis of heredity. Nucleotides are the alphabets of this genetic language. Any change in the sequence of this may lead to changes in the cellular characteristics which is referred to as mutation. Though mutation is a phenomenon occurring regularly but is taken care of by various cellular mechanisms. Genetic code its ambiguity, replication, transcription, translation, and mutation has been dealt with in this chapter.
