ABSTRACT

220It has become possible to alter the genetic material and obtain the desired result through genetic manipulation techniques. Genetic engineering involves the manipulation of genes of an organism to express new desired traits. Bacteria, plants, yeast, and animals are common examples of genetically engineered organisms. Genetic manipulation involves physically moving and expressing a gene from a source organism to a recipient organism. In this chapter, we will briefly discuss the processes of cloning, and expressing the foreign gene through a plasmid in a host through heterologous gene expression to produce recombinant products. We will also briefly discuss the ethics behind the use and production of these products and genetically engineered organisms.
