ABSTRACT

In the world of organizing, power provides the strength to bring about political, social, and economic change. There are three types of power: power over, power with, and power for. Power over is where an individual, organization, or the state uses its power to limit or expand rights or resources. Power with is when people share power with each other. Power for is when an individual or an organization advocates on behalf of a person. Power manifests itself in three forms: organized people, organized money, and organized violence. Organized people is where community members who are many times marginalized come together to work collectively on the enactment of a demand that they have to improve their community. Organized money is where people from the economic elite come together and use their collective wealth and influence to work for policies. Organized violence is used by the state to maintain power and control over other states and foreign combatants.
