ABSTRACT

In human resource management, one cannot ignore the need to manage diversity; individual and group differences matter. This chapter aims to understand the concept of self-identity; understand the relationship of identity to group behavior; explores the many forms of identity; and explains the policy issues that impact on diversity. Self-identity is essentially a conscious sense of individual uniqueness which contains an unconscious striving for continuity and a feeling of belonging to some group or groups to which they are attached. Social identity theory proposes a process whereby people come to identify with particular groups and separate themselves from others. Everything becomes more complicated by the fact that individuals can have multiple identities which stem from different group influences, all of which can influence behaviour. Groups within hospitality have separate identities and see each other's worth differentially.
