ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the term cosmopolitan and cosmopolitanism in current philosophical. It provides a contextual analysis of the global conditions that surround and penetrate schools. The chapter describes the analysis of cosmopolitanism within the context of education and, more specifically, within the institution of schooling by providing a bottom-up focus on student identities. The chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the ways in which newcomers portray cosmopolitan understandings and demonstrate sources of critical cosmopolitan agency. It examines the ways in which international students relate to the cosmopolitan discourse and express critical cosmopolitan understandings of education and of their lives. The book addresses the ways in which they embody sources of cosmopolitan agency. It aims to situate the role of the teacher in a critical cosmopolitan school and that of teacher education in a critical cosmopolitan teacher preparation program.
