ABSTRACT

Care has been taken in attending to multiple and simultaneously held identities in discussing the experiences of trans* people. As noted, how a trans* person is located in relation to race and ethnicity, social class, sex, and gender makes a significant difference in both the types of experiences faced and the resources that can be drawn on to meet any challenges that arise. The majority of trans* literature to date has focused on the social and medical transition of trans* people as well as transition's immediate after-effects. Trans* people do not stop existing as trans* people after they transition. Coming out and the revelations of acknowledging a trans* identity capture the popular imagination and headlines. Future studies can expand by further exploring the informal and formal social networks trans* people create in their personal and work lives and understanding the importance of these networks to the wellbeing of trans* individuals.
