ABSTRACT

Healthcare professionals are using virtual reality to create groundbreaking mental health treatments, musicians are releasing 360-degree music videos, and major Hollywood production houses are adding immersive experiences to their content. Educational applications abound as well, such as Google’s “Expeditions” program, which allows teachers to take their students on immersive guided tours all over the world. Many of the brightest minds in media are in the process of figuring out what that looks like. Some have been experimenting with immersive storytelling since long before most of people had even heard of it. Within this immersive media umbrella there are many variations in form, some major and subtle, but they tend to vary across just few axes. Mixed-media is a catch-all category that encompasses all forms of immersive media. The other treats immersive space itself as the main canvas, embedding traditional media such as photos or video into that environment.
