ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents an explanation of three disabilities: left neglect; high-functioning mild aphasia; and foot drop. She provides specific examples as to how each disability has altered her teaching. The author explains how the disabilities are exacerbated when she is tired or stressed and therefore continued to influence her teaching. She explores medical journals to learn more about the disability, severe cases of aphasia, thereby making it hard to find others with similar aphasia. Left neglect manifested itself in her daily life. For example, the author would only eat the food on the right side of her plate to finish eating. After she was diagnosed with left neglect, it felt as though her brain’s decision to leave out her left side was something being done to her and she needed to accept it. Aphasia is “an impairment of language affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write”.
