ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides the training aids, which include some explanatory material on the technique, clear directions on the sequence of steps to take in performing the analysis and in many cases worked examples of analyzed texts, and of scored recall protocols. It explains how to analyze the structure of expository text and explanations of how to determine the world knowledge needed to understand expository texts. The book also provides examples of research on all three aspects of text understanding—namely, structure, world knowledge and process. A complete account of text understanding also requires specifying the processes that utilize these text and world knowledge structures to comprehend texts and build memories that represent the information in the texts in a form that facilitates later retrieval.
