ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the main areas of research and theory in sociolinguistics. It presents an overview of methods, topics of interest, and related aspects that define this discipline, including sociolinguistics’ relation to linguistic anthropology and other branches of linguistics. The origins of sociolinguistics are also discussed. Finally, several examples of what sociolinguistic analysis entails are presented and illustrated.
