ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the various learning styles one see in the classroom. It then moves into a discussion regarding multicultural education and what it means to be a culturally responsive teacher. The chapter focuses on teaching English Language Learners (ELLs) social studies and various teaching techniques that can be utilized to accommodate the needs of English learners. Non-English-speaking students are a reality in the contemporary classroom. The most popular and accepted term for non-English-speaking students is English Learners (ELs) or ELLs. The chapter details Gardner's multiple intelligences, ideals of multicultural education, and what it means to be a culturally responsive teacher. It shares numerous techniques and strategies for helping English Language Learners and exceptional education students learn social studies. The chapter concludes with a discussion of teaching exceptional education students and details various strategies elementary teachers can utilize to accommodate social studies instruction.
