ABSTRACT

The Visualizing Venice Digital Visualization Training Workshops are intensive 2-week experiences that provide graduate students and beginning faculty an introduction to visualization technologies for research and teaching. The workshops take place on-site in Venice, at Venice International University (VIU) on Isola di San Servolo, a 10-minute boat-ride from the city center. VIU itself is a consortium of more than 15 member institutions from around the world, including Iuav Architectural University of Venice, Duke University, and the University of Padova, among others. English is the language of instruction for the workshops, though we always intentionally admit some Italian students, and their presence proves invaluable when working with Italian-sourced documents. While learning something about digital tools for historical and cultural visualization is an obvious goal of these workshops, people also have broader goals related to how scholarship, teaching, and public outreach are conducted.
