ABSTRACT

Visualizing Venice proposed at its inception that the use of digital tools should accompany more traditional methods of historical research as part of the study of architectural and urban history. Since its formation in 2010, the research team decided to investigate the architecture and the open spaces of one particular city. It should be emphasized that in its early years, the Visualizing Venice approach was primarily "geographic", whereas in recent years it has become more "thematic". It should be noted that the Visualizing Venice team has always been particularly interested in the lack of homogeneity among the various island settlements; their architectural history was often complex and their function changed over time. While the Water and the Food Exhibition considered the city and the lagoon as a whole, the Ghetto exhibition focused on a specific area within the urban fabric.
