The subclavian artery The right subclavian artery (Figs. 23.1 and 22.6, p. 375) arises from the brachiocephalic artery behind the sterno­ clavicular joint, passes laterally behind scalenus anterior and arches over the apex of the lung and the 1st rib to become the axillary artery at the lateral border of the rib. The left artery arises from the arch of the aorta, arches over the lung and enters the arm as its continuation, the axillary artery.
