ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on a few European sources related to shipbuilding written in the sixteenth century. It explores the art of shipbuilding in various parts of the world, such as Fernando Oliveira. The quality of timber available on the western coast of India surpassed that of other regions in India or even that of Europe. Calicut for centuries together occupied the pride of place in shipbuilding on account of the easy transportation facilities through river from the forested areas and areas suitable for the treatment of the timber for ships. The book provides how Portuguese mariners unaccustomed with the waters of the Indian Ocean prepared a number of roteiros and regimentos for navigation. It considers various aspects of Indian shipbuilding and navigation vis-a-vis the Portuguese maritime activities in India during the sixteenth century.
