ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyzes the political economy involved in the negotiation of the US-Israel Free Trade Area (FTA), and illustrates that the process by which the US negotiates trade agreements encourages the maintenance of the existing structure of protection. Understanding the political dynamics that accompanied the negotiation of the FTA sheds light on the process by which the US negotiates all trade agreements. The interactions among pressure groups, the Congress, and the Executive branch that were present in the negotiation of the FTA are present in the negotiation of any trade agreement, bilateral or multilateral. The US-Israel FTA is significant because it creates a precedent for subsequent free trade areas and the Administration has announced that it favors negotiating free trade areas with other interested countries.
