ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the various options for gaining external advice, from political advisors who provide essential support for the stakeholder engagement programme, to high-level Boards that provide independent advice to the leadership team. It addresses the tools available to make a programme effective, such as an assessment of political and regulatory risk and highlights the importance of developing an organisation's 'story' and key messages. The chapter makes the case for the 5Cs: a coherent 'story', clarity of message, a consistent approach, a concerted effort and the need for coordinated action. There are many instances where good leadership is crucial to successful stakeholder engagement programme. A stakeholder mapping exercise is an important first step in developing an engagement programme, whether the programme addresses a single project or a broader policy-related issue. An organisation can define where and how it wishes to be active, and it will then be in good position to develop a stakeholder engagement programme to match its aspirations.
