ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an invaluable understanding of the crucial importance of using video in mentoring. Kaisa Martikainen describes in detail the process of shooting videos, choosing a successful video clip to be reviewed with her mentee and the principles of empowering discussions in mentor and practitioner meetings. Informed by Video Interaction Guidance (VIG), Kaisa's sensitive and empowering mentoring style is illustrated with transcripts of conversations she had with her mentees. Kaisa also describes the practitioner's experiences in using Intensive Interaction with a person with complex communication needs as well as her experiences and insights on the mentoring process. Intensive Interaction is a practical approach to interacting with people with learning disabilities and/or autism who do not find it easy communicating or being social. Practitioners may develop their interactive style either by reflecting on their own interaction or through guided reflection with a mentor. A mentor is a person who has more knowledge and experience in Intensive Interaction.
