ABSTRACT

Transportation planning is a simple concept to understand, however the limitless permutations that can potentially affect one's lived experience make it an essential cornerstone of modern society. As touched upon earlier, the study of transportation is often broken into modes or more simply the method by which things move. This chapter mainly deals with the movement of people, with freight being touched upon only briefly. Walking is the most basic mode of transportation. It is a biologically engrained condition and despite the outsourcing to technology, is still a practice we engage in on a regular basis. Pioneers in the field of transportation planning, such as Robert Moses, saw blight as a mandate for sweeping change. Similar to other planning issues, how to effectively deliver mass transportation can be categorized as a wicked problem, where there is no perfect solution due to unknowable or constantly changing parameters.
