ABSTRACT

Economic development is a planning process that brings jobs, revenue, or other economic benefits to a public organization. Economic development can be used to redevelops an area of the community that may be blighted with criminal activity or is socio-economically depressed. Economic development can produce positive results, such as new jobs, new revenue sources coming into the city, and potentially an increase in the tax base. For an economic development plan to work successfully there has to be a plan to determine what the city can offer to entice businesses and other organizations to relocate to their community. In 1974 the City of Boston set aside two city blocks to create an adult district known as Boston Adult District (BAD) but more commonly called the Combat Zone. Economic development projects should synergize with the urban design of the city to maintain a consistent appearance and function.
