ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the role of translation in multilingual institutions such as the European Union, multicultural societies and minority and migrant groups, and explains the topic of ethics in translation practice, extending it to translation in areas of conflict and war as well as the increasing role of citizen media involving ad hoc translation. It looks at a type of translation which is fast growing in importance today: audiovisual translation. The increasing concern about ethics in translation studies can also be seen in the context of a growing interest in the social and political role of translators, intimately related to issues regarding what constitutes a code of ethics and ethical practice. Audiovisual translation is one of the most innovative and fastest growing fields of action for translators worldwide. One of the most exciting developments in the field of audiovisual translation today is the involvement of cybercultures as sites of interventionist practices.
