ABSTRACT

The self-narrative of the non-permanent worker impacts on their decisions to develop stamina and endurance, combined with a degree of performativity that appears as willingness to stifle grievances that arise out of onerous working conditions. Pre-service non-permanent workers need to be aware not only of these conditions, but to develop epistemic stances in relation to such norms and practices. Supporting continuous development of non-permanent workers can be looked at from both the perspectives of minimising risks and expanding potential. Solutions have to respond to the contextualised preferences of non-permanent workers according to the functionings they seek. The chapter provides a discussion supporting the continuous development of non-permanent workers from two perspectives: minimising risks and expanding potential. The challenges non-permanent workers face in addressing these perspectives suggest that we need innovative approaches to address these challenges.
